SOMA Rwanda to Celebrate National Literacy Month

Kigali, Rwanda – September 2023 – SOMA Rwanda, a network of organizations working to promote literacy in Rwanda, will celebrate National Literacy Month in September 2023. The month-long event will focus on the theme of “Promoting literacy for all to enhance foundational learning.

The National Literacy Month celebration will kick off on September 11, 2023, with the Soma Rwanda Celebration of International Literacy Day. The event will be held at the Rugerero ECD Centre in Rubavu District, Eastern Province and will feature a variety of activities, including readings, performances, and workshops.

Throughout the month, Soma Rwanda members and partners will organize a variety of other activities to promote literacy, including:

  • Book fairs and reading festivals
  • Reading clubs and storytime sessions
  • Training workshops for teachers and parents
  • Community outreach events

The National Literacy Month celebration is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and to encourage everyone to get involved in promoting literacy in Rwanda.

Here are some key messages that will be shared during the National Literacy Month celebration:

  • Literacy is the foundation of all learning.
  • Everyone has the right to learn to read and write.
  • Parents and caregivers play a key role in supporting children’s literacy development.
  • Teachers can create a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Communities can work together to create more accessible and inclusive spaces for reading.

SOMA Rwanda is calling on everyone to join the celebration of National Literacy Month and to take action to promote literacy in Rwanda.

Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Visit your local library or community center and sign up for a reading club or storytime session.
  • Volunteer to tutor a child or adult who is learning to read.
  • Donate books to a local library or school.
  • Advocate for policies that support literacy education.

By taking action, we can all help to make Rwanda a more literate nation
