National Literacy Month 2024

September 10, 2024

September 2024 marks an exciting milestone as Rwanda gears up for its annual National Literacy Month, extending the celebration beyond the traditional International Literacy Day on September 8th. Literacy is a fundamental human right, and this month-long initiative aims to promote a reading culture that fosters lifelong learning, personal growth, and community development. In line with Vision 2050, Rwanda’s ambitious plan to become a knowledge-based, middle-income nation, promoting literacy is key to building a bright future for the nation.

Why Literacy Matters for Rwanda

Literacy is the foundation of all learning. It has the transformative power to change lives, unlocking doors to knowledge and opportunity. For Rwanda, improving literacy is essential for achieving social, economic, and educational goals. The National Literacy Month, organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Soma Rwanda platform, seeks to engage communities, raise awareness, and highlight the progress made in literacy development across the country.

Launched in 2012, Soma Rwanda unites stakeholders from various sectors to promote literacy among children, youth, and adults. This year’s Literacy Month will focus on the Foundational Learning Strategy, a key initiative aimed at improving reading fluency and comprehension for students in early grades.

Foundational Learning: A Key to Promote Multilingual Education

This year’s Literacy Month theme, “Foundational Learning: A Key to Promote Multilingual Education,” aligns with UNESCO’s focus on multilingual literacy for mutual understanding and peace. In Rwanda, where multilingualism is a cornerstone of cultural identity, strong literacy skills are essential for achieving proficiency in multiple languages.

Key Activities of National Literacy Month 2024

Throughout September, exciting literacy promotion activities will take place across Rwanda:

  1. Community Reading Campaigns – Schools, libraries, and public spaces will host collective reading sessions to encourage a love for books.
  2. Book Fairs and Exhibitions – These events will provide access to a wide range of reading materials and highlight local authors.
  3. Storytelling Sessions and Competitions – Children will enjoy storytelling sessions, while young writers will participate in story writing competitions.
  4. Field Visits and Reading Clubs – Key government officials will visit communities to engage with children in reading clubs and other literacy events.
  5. Media Campaigns – Radio, television, and social media will broadcast literacy messages, success stories, and information about upcoming activities.

The official launch will take place on September 20, 2024, in Rusizi District’s Nkombo Sector, where the Rwenje Community Library will be inaugurated. This event will be a celebration of Rwanda’s commitment to literacy, featuring cultural performances, keynote speeches, reading sessions, and the rewarding of top performers in reading competitions.
